Niños del Lago is a unique children’s project designed to transform the lives of Guatemala’s most impoverished children. Our goal is to help at-risk children stay in school, and succeed in school. It exists to extend the work of privately-funded, not-for-profit educational programs created for children who are too poor or have too many special needs to attend/afford government-run schools.
Ninos del Lago is an educational camp experience offering healing and hope for children whose daily struggle for survival has robbed them of the ability to imagine a better future.
Children who demonstrate promise and stay in their school program are invited to return year after year, and are given additional incentives to stay in school and off the streets. Niños del Lago children who demonstrate potential can become Camp Counselors and have an opportunity to earn a University Scholarship.
Niños del Lago is located in an inspirational setting in a natural forest overlooking Lake Atitlan in the Guatemalan Highlands.When fully operational, we plan to receive 108 children every week, 432/month and, over a 7-month season of operation, 3,000/year.
Our goal is to encourage Niños del Lago children to: 1) stay in school,2) develop a sense of self-esteem and self-determination, and 3) gain the strength and resilience to overcome their challenging circumstances.
